BaZi Day Master Guide & Calculator
What Is a BaZi Day Master?
The Day Master, also called the Day Stem, is the Heavenly Stem at the top of the Day Pillar. It represents the self in a BaZi chart. A chart has Year, Month, Day, and Hour Pillars, and each pillar contains one Heavenly Stem above one Earthly Branch.
There are ten Day Masters: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui. Each one combines a Five Element with Yin or Yang polarity. For example, Wu is Yang Earth, while Yi is Yin Wood.
The Day Master is the reference point for identifying the Ten Gods and assessing chart strength, but it does not describe a person on its own. A fuller reading also considers the birth month, the other seven characters, and how their elements interact.

How Is the Day Master Calculated?
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. In a Four Pillars chart, look at the Day column and take the top character.
Here is a sample chart based on the current time (2026-09-16 11:49). The highlighted Heavenly Stem in the Day Pillar is the Day Master, which is Gui in this example.
| Year | Month | Day | Hour | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heavenly Stem | Bing | Ding | Gui | Wu |
| Earthly Branch | Wu | You | Si | Wu |
What Does a Strong or Weak Day Master Mean?
Day Master strength describes how much support the Day Master receives in the full chart and how well it can carry the generating, controlling, draining, and consuming effects of the other elements. Strong and weak are relative chart conditions, not measures of health, personality, or ability.
Readers usually start with seasonal support from the birth month, then check for roots in the Earthly Branches. Direct Resource, Indirect Resource, Friend Star, and Rob Wealth may add support, while Eating God, Hurting Officer, Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth, Direct Officer, and Seven Killings may drain or control the Day Master. Neither strong nor weak is automatically better; the full chart shows how these forces work together.

All three come from birth information, but they refer to different parts of the chart.
| Term | Where It Comes From | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Day Master | The Heavenly Stem at the top of the Day Pillar | Ding in a Ding-Si Day Pillar; the Day Master is Ding Fire |
| Day Pillar | The Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch pair for the birth day | Ding-Si: Ding is the Day Stem and Si is the Day Branch |
| Chinese Zodiac | Usually taken from the Earthly Branch of the Year Pillar | A Si Year Branch corresponds to the Snake |
How the Day Master Is Used in a BaZi Reading
It identifies the self
The Day Master is the chart's reference point. Five Element relationships between it and the other stems and branches describe how the self interacts with people, events, and the surrounding environment.
It determines the Ten Gods
The Ten Gods are relationships, not fixed labels attached to individual characters. For a Yi Wood Day Master, for example, Ren Water is Direct Resource and Ding Fire is Eating God.
It connects the full chart
The Day Master's element and polarity are only the starting point. Season, strength, Ten Gods, and stem-branch relationships explain why the same Day Master can appear differently across charts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my birth time to find my Day Master?
Usually, your birth date is enough to find your Day Master. Birth time is mainly used to determine the Hour Pillar, but it can also affect the Day Pillar near a change-of-day boundary when different boundary rules, time zones, or true solar time adjustments are used. If you were born near that boundary, use your exact birth time and birthplace to generate a full chart.
Can two people with the same Day Master be very different?
Yes. The Day Master is only one of the eight characters. Two Yi Wood Day Masters can appear very different when their birth month, other stems and branches, Day Master strength, and Ten Gods combinations are different.
Does a strong Day Master mean a stronger personality?
No. Day Master strength describes the balance between support and drain in the chart. It does not mean that someone has a more forceful personality, better health, or greater ability.
