Mao-Shen Hidden Combination

Mao's main qi is Yi Wood, while Shen's main qi is Geng Metal. Yi and Geng form one of the Five Heavenly Stem Combinations, so Mao and Shen contain a hidden Yi-Geng connection. Wu Xing Jing Ji records that Mao and Shen carry Yi-Geng Metal qi and that the relationship occurs through their lu positions.

Later BaZi practice commonly describes this as a lu-based Hidden Combination: Yi's lu is at Mao and Geng's lu is at Shen. The modern term “Mao-Shen Hidden Combination” develops from this older branch-and-lu relationship.

Mao belongs to Wood and Shen to Metal, so at the branch level Shen Metal still restrains Mao Wood. At the Hidden Stem level, however, Yi inside Mao combines with Geng inside Shen. The pair therefore contains both combination and control.

The Hidden Combination does not cancel Metal's restraint of Wood, and Yi-Geng does not automatically transform into Metal. Seasonal strength, rooting, and other Elements in the chart still determine the result.

Yin-Chou contains several Hidden Stem pairs that match the Heavenly Stem Combinations. Mao-Shen is more concentrated: its core is the single Yi-Geng pairing between Mao's Yi Wood and Shen's Geng Metal.

For this reason, Shen's Ren Water and Wu Earth do not need to be forced into the Hidden Combination. The relevant hidden link is specifically Yi-Geng.

Hidden Combination is best treated as an additional sign of an underlying connection, private cooperation, or internal pull. The life area involved depends on the Ten Gods represented by Yi and Geng and on the pillar positions of Mao and Shen.

If Mao-Shen appears in an important position, the hidden connection can be noted and tested against the rest of the chart. It should not be used by itself to predict a secret relationship, partnership, or any other fixed event.
