Si-You-Chou Metal Combination

Metal begins its growth stage at Si, reaches its peak at You, and enters storage at Chou. These three positions form the complete Si-You-Chou Metal Combination.

The Three Combination system is not based on all three branches sharing the same basic Element. Si is a Fire branch but marks the growth stage of Metal; Chou is an Earth branch but serves as Metal's storage; You is the peak stage of Metal.

This is the part of Si-You-Chou that is most easily misunderstood. Si does not participate because its basic Element changes from Fire to Metal. It participates because Si is the growth position of Metal in the twelve-stage cycle. Yu Ding Xing Li Kao Yuan explains the pattern directly as Metal growing at Si, peaking at You, and entering storage at Chou.

It is therefore useful to separate a branch's own Element from the growth-stage position it provides for another Element. The Metal Combination is based on the latter relationship.

Under the definition in San Ming Tong Hui, all three branches are required for a complete Three Combination. Si-You or You-Chou can still be read as two-branch combinations, but neither is identical to a full Si-You-Chou Metal Combination.

Having all three branches is only the first step. The actual strength of Metal also depends on season, the condition of You Metal, further support from Earth or Metal, and whether Fire, Wood, clashes, or other relationships alter the structure.

When the Combination is established, Metal becomes more concentrated and influential. If Metal is useful to the chart, the structure can strengthen it. If Metal is already excessive, the same Combination can push the chart further toward Metal.

The Metal Combination alone does not predict a specific personality or event. Concrete effects depend on the Ten Gods represented by Metal, the pillar positions of Si, You, and Chou, and the rest of the chart.
