In BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny), Si-You-Chou three combine to Metal refers to the Earthly Branch group Si (巳), You (酉), and Chou (丑). When the three branches appear together and the chart supports Metal, the structure is read as a Metal Three Harmony combination, also called a Si-You-Chou Metal Bureau or Metal formation.

This pattern does not turn every chart into "all Metal." It shows that the branches are gathering toward Metal. The strength and quality of that Metal depend on season, nearby stems, disruption from other branches, and the chart's overall balance.

What does Si-You-Chou mean?

Si, You, and Chou belong to one of the four Three Harmony groups:

In English, this pattern may be called Metal Bureau, Metal alliance, Metal formation, or Three Harmony Metal. All of these names refer to Si, You, and Chou gathering into a Metal-oriented formation.

Bureau translates 局, as in 巳酉丑三合金局. Here it does not mean an office or department. It means a formed configuration or gathered elemental pattern. When the Metal Bureau is active, Metal themes come forward: rules, standards, tools, precision, judgment, cutting, refining, enforcement, contracts, finance, auditing, and decisive closure.

When is the combination strong?

Si, You, and Chou give the formation its frame. Strength still has to be judged from the rest of the chart.

Is it Shen-You-Chou or Si-You-Chou?

The standard Three Harmony Metal group is Si-You-Chou (巳酉丑). Shen-You-Chou (申酉丑) is a common mixed phrase, but it is not the standard name of the Metal Three Harmony group.

What can the Metal tendency show?

Metal in BaZi often relates to standards, form, tools, structure, discipline, reduction, and final decisions. In life events, a strong Metal tendency may appear through contracts, systems, rules, compliance, finance, accounting, engineering, law, surgery, instruments, assessment, or work where precision matters.

Metal also becomes a different Ten God depending on the Day Master:

The Day Master is Ding Fire (丁火). For Ding Fire, Metal is the wealth element. If the chart can handle Metal, this formation may point to money management, assets, business structure, financial discipline, technical work, or a role where resources must be measured and controlled. If Metal is too strong for the chart, the same formation may bring pressure from money, contracts, performance standards, debt, or demanding external systems.

The day branch Si gives Ding Fire a root, so the chart is not simply overrun by Metal. Fire and Metal sit in a direct relationship: Fire refines Metal, while Metal can pull Ding Fire into wealth concerns. The formation is easier to use when timing gives enough Fire or Wood support.
