Shen-Zi-Chen Water Half Combinations

The full Water Combination consists of Shen, Zi, and Chen. Shen is the growth stage of Water, Zi is its peak, and Chen is its storage stage. In common modern BaZi usage, the two partial combinations that include the peak branch Zi are Shen-Zi and Zi-Chen.

Shen-Chen also belongs to the same three-branch family, but it lacks Zi, the peak branch. In this site's taxonomy, Shen-Chen is treated as a Hidden Arch toward Zi rather than the same kind of Half Combination as Shen-Zi or Zi-Chen.

Shen-Zi connects the growth and peak stages of Water. Shen marks the beginning of Water's cycle, while Zi is its strongest stage. The pair therefore has a clear Water direction, but without Chen it is not the complete Shen-Zi-Chen Water Combination.

Its actual effect still depends on whether Zi Water is seasonally strong, whether Metal or Water provides further support, and whether Zi is restrained by other relationships such as a Wu Clash or Chou Combination. A Half Combination does not mean that a full Water structure has already formed.

Zi-Chen connects the peak and storage stages of Water. Zi provides the strongest Water qi, while Chen is the storage branch of Water, giving the pair a peak-to-storage structure.

Both Shen-Zi and Zi-Chen revolve around Zi, but they represent different parts of the cycle: Shen-Zi links growth to peak, while Zi-Chen links peak to storage. Neither should be treated as a fixed percentage of the strength of the full Three Combination.

If a chart contains Shen-Zi and later gains Chen, or contains Zi-Chen and later gains Shen, the chart should be reassessed to see whether all three branches now form the full Water Combination and whether other clashes or strength conditions interfere.

San Ming Tong Hui describes the complete pattern as a cycle of growth, completion, and storage. This is why a Half Combination and a full Three Combination should be treated as different structural levels.
