Yin and Yang in BaZi

• Yang (阳): outward, active, direct, and expanding.
• Yin (阴): inward, receptive, subtle, and contracting.

Neither is inherently better, stronger, or more favorable than the other.

Yin-Yang polarity helps distinguish the Yin and Yang forms of the Five Elements, classify Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, and determine paired Ten God relationships.

In BaZi, every Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch is classified by both a Five Element and a Yin-Yang polarity. These two attributes together define their basic elemental type.

For example, Jia (甲) is Yang Wood and Yi (乙) is Yin Wood. Among the Earthly Branches, Yin (寅) is Yang Wood, while Mao (卯) is Yin Wood.

Your Day Master is always either Yin or Yang, depending on its Heavenly Stem.

For example, Jia Wood is Yang Wood, while Yi Wood is Yin Wood. Your Day Master polarity describes how your core Five Element is expressed, but it does not mean your entire BaZi chart is simply Yin or Yang.

Once the Five Element relationship to the Day Master is identified, Yin-Yang polarity determines which of the paired Ten Gods applies. Same and opposite polarity lead to different Ten God classifications.

Having more Yin or Yang does not automatically mean a BaZi chart is unbalanced. Yin-Yang balance is not determined by a 50/50 count alone; the Five Elements, Day Master, season, Hidden Stems, and overall chart structure also matter.

A chart with more Yang may show more outward or active tendencies, while more Yin may show more inward or receptive tendencies, but these are only broad tendencies and should not be interpreted in isolation.

A Pure Yang chart has only Yang Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches across all four pillars, while a Pure Yin chart contains only Yin stems and branches.

Some BaZi traditions also consider the Hidden Stems when defining whether a chart is truly Pure Yin or Pure Yang, so definitions may vary by school.

Pure Yin or Pure Yang does not by itself determine whether a chart is good or bad.

Traditional interpretations may associate Pure Yang with more outward, direct, or forceful expression and Pure Yin with more inward, cautious, or receptive expression, but the overall BaZi chart still needs to be analyzed as a whole.

Yes, but it is only one factor. Yin and Yang Day Masters may show complementary ways of expressing the same or different elements, but opposite polarity does not automatically mean better compatibility.
