Si-You-Chou Metal Half Combinations

Si-You-Chou is the Three Combination family of Metal: Si is Metal's growth stage, You its peak, and Chou its storage stage. The two common Half Combinations that include the peak branch You are Si-You and You-Chou.

Si-Chou belongs to the same family but lacks You. In this site's taxonomy, Si-Chou is treated as a Hidden Arch toward You rather than the same type of Half Combination.

Si-You can be confusing because Si is basically a Fire branch. The Half Combination is based on Metal's twelve-stage cycle rather than Si's own basic Element: Metal begins its growth stage at Si and reaches its peak at You.

This does not mean that Si Fire simply turns into Metal. It means that Si provides the growth position within the Metal Combination system, while You provides the peak position.

You-Chou connects the peak and storage stages of Metal. You is itself a Metal branch and the strongest point of Metal, while Chou is an Earth branch that serves as Metal's storage.

Both pairs revolve around You, but Si-You links growth to peak whereas You-Chou links peak to storage. Their actual strength still depends on season, support from Earth or Metal, and whether strong Fire restrains Metal.

Si-You or You-Chou contains only two stages of the full Metal structure. The complete Si-You-Chou Combination requires the growth, peak, and storage branches to be present together. San Ming Tong Hui states that a missing branch prevents the pattern from being treated as the complete Three Combination.

If the missing third branch later appears, the chart should be reassessed for the full Metal Combination. A Half Combination only shows that a Metal-oriented relationship is present; it is not the same as the complete Metal structure and should not be assigned a fixed percentage of its strength.
