General Discussion on Lu and Ma

Original Text

Interpretation

Salary is the source of sustenance for life, and the "horse" (a term in fortune - telling) is the foundation for supporting one's body. These two are most preferably seen together. For example, for those with the earthly branches of Yin, Wu, and Xu, the "horse" is in Shen. For those with the Heavenly Stem of Jia, the salary is in Yin. When we calculate according to the Heavenly Stems on the earthly branches, for Jia on Yin, we get Bing, and on Shen, we get Ren. Then, Bing is regarded as the Heavenly Salary, and Ren is regarded as the Heavenly Horse. When they are seen alternately in the day and hour columns, it is called the Heavenly Salary and Heavenly Horse. Moreover, when a person with the Heavenly Stem of Jia calculates to Xu and sees Jiaxu, it is called the Living Salary. When a person born in the year of Jiazi calculates and sees Bingyin, it is called the Living Horse. Also, for those with Yin, Wu, Xu and the "horse" in Shen, if the hour - stem is Geng; for those with Hai, Mao, Wei and the "horse" in Si, if the hour - stem is Bing; for those with Shen, Zi, Chen and the "horse" in Yin, if the hour - stem is Jia; for those with Si, You, Chou and the "horse" in Hai, if the hour - stem is Ren. By calculating the hour - stem from the day - branch and the day - branch from the hour - stem, and getting them alternately, it is called the Interchange of Salary and Horse. For another example, the salary of Jia is in Yin, and the "horse" of Shen, Zi, Chen is also in Yin. For those born in the years of Jiazi, Jiashen, and Jiachen, and the hour is Bingyin, where the Emperor's Seat combines the salary and the "horse", it is called the Salary and Horse in the Same Place. If the "horse" is behind the salary, for example, for those born in the year of Xinsi and the day and hour are Xu; for those born in the year of Yihai and the day and hour are Chen. The salary of Xin is in You, and the "horse" is in Hai; the salary of Yi is in Mao, and the "horse" is in Si. Although the salary and the "horse" are not directly seen, they are hidden within, which is called the Enclosure of Salary and Horse. The legacy of Guiguzi says: "If the hour occupies the day's salary, one will have a smooth path to high positions; if the five 'horses' run alternately, one can reach high - ranking official positions." "Lueluzi" says: "When one turns away from the salary and chases after the 'horse', one will be in a poor and miserable situation; when the salary and the 'horse' are in the same place, one will hold high - ranking official positions, either as a high - ranking official in the third - level or the eighth - level." The book on fortune - making has the theory of the Lonely and Widowed Salary and Horse. For example, when Jiazi meets Bingyin, and Gengwu meets Renshen. Although it seems that the salary and the "horse" are in the same place, actually, Jiazi represents the first Yang, Yichou the second Yang, and Bingyin the third Yang, which is pure Yang without Yin; Gengwu represents the first Yin, Xinwei the second Yin, and Renshen the third Yin, which is pure Yin without Yang. These two situations are called the Lonely and Widowed. Even if the salary and the "horse" are in the same place, it is not auspicious. "The Song for Clarifying Ignorance" says: "When the salary and the 'horse' fly to the sky without punishment and restraint, and are in a prosperous state, one will surely reach a noble position."
