On the Good and Bad Luck of the Heavenly Stems Sitting on the Earthly Branches, Considering the Month, Hour, and Fortune Cycles -1

Original Text

Interpretation

A and B

Jia Wood belongs to Yang and is like the material for beams and pillars. It thrives in autumn and winter and is auspicious when it meets the Shen and Zi months. If Geng and Xin are seen in the Bazi chart, it can be compared to the use of axes and chisels, indicating fame and fortune. When the luck cycle passes through the Shen, You, Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei phases, it can bring great success, and it is especially wonderful when Xin (the official star) is present. It is taboo for the combination of Yin, Wu, and Xu and the appearance of Ding Fire (the hurting officer) in the chart, which indicates a life of hard - labor and unaccomplished deeds, and the luck cycle will also be unfavorable. If there is a combination and Ding is revealed, and there are Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, and Wu and Ji are revealed on the Heavenly Stems, and then the luck cycle enters the wealth phase, with the hurting officer generating wealth, it can bring great fortune.

Yi Wood is of the yin nature and represents the wood of vital energy. When it encounters the spring season, its flowers and leaves grow luxuriantly. It also thrives in the season of minor spring. If it falls into the two combinations of Hai-Mao-Wei and Jia-Zi-Chen and then experiences the northern movement of the fortune, even if Bing, Ding, Geng, and Xin appear, it doesn't matter. What it忌讳 (is most afraid of) is the combination of Yin-Wu-Xu which belongs to fire, and a large presence of Si-You-Chou. In such cases, it will suffer damages. If it then experiences the southern movement of the fortune, it is certain to lead to an early death.

For A and B (in the context of the Five - Element theory), it is important that wood is in a proper state. One should know that the prosperity of metal and water is truly remarkable.

In spring, it goes south and in autumn, it returns north. In winter and summer, it travels west to start the source of fortune.

Those born on the days of Jia or Yi, sitting on the earthly branches of Si, You, Chou, Shen, and Xu (which are associated with the metal element), should have their fortune - making periods in the areas related to earth and metal. If they are born in the months represented by Yin, Mao, and Chen but do not form a wood - related combination, it is advisable that the hour pillar leads to the earth - metal domain, and they will achieve great nobility. The same principle applies to their fortune - making periods, and they will hold long - term official positions. If they are born in the months of Si, You, Chou, and Shen, and the hour pillar leads to the earthly branches of Hai, Mao, Wei, and Yin, they can obtain nobility. Otherwise, if it does not meet this condition, it is either excessive or insufficient. In this case, they need their fortune - making periods to be in the areas related to water and wood. Otherwise, they will be poor scholars. If there is already a wealth star in the Bazi (natal chart), they should beware of the peer stars competing for the wealth. If there is no wealth star originally, they don't need to worry. Just as wood can be made into a useful tool with the help of metal, a benevolent person can have courage; and metal can be made into a good material with the help of wood, a brave person must have benevolence. This is the combination of toughness and gentleness, and the balance of yin and yang. They prefer to have wealth and official stars in their fortune - making periods. If there is wood but no metal, the Geng and Xin (metal elements in the Heavenly Stems) will be insufficient, and there will be a lack of righteousness. If there is metal but no fire, it means being brave without propriety, which will lead to chaos when the metal element is too strong. If there is too much metal and no water, it will be like a withered situation. If there is too much wood and no metal, it will be over - prosperous. This shows that the elements of metal and wood are not in harmony. A situation of extreme yin or extreme yang represents a hard - to - define fate. Even if they encounter wealth and official stars, they will not be prosperous.

In the six Jia days, Xin is regarded as the proper official, Geng as the partial official, and Wu and Ji as wealth. If Wu, Ji, and Xin are revealed in the year, month, and hour columns, and the birth occurs in the three autumn months, the four seasons, or in a metal - earth structure, the wealth and official positions are useful. If these three characters are not revealed, but the birth is still in the three autumn months, the four seasons, or in a metal - earth structure, it can also be regarded as a situation of wealth and official positions. When Jia and Yi appear to seize wealth, and Bing and Ding appear as the hurting officer, achieving fame and fortune will be difficult. If one is born in spring or summer, or in a fire - wood structure, the wealth and official positions lack vital energy. Even if there is some nourishment and assistance, fame and fortune will still be meager. One prefers to have a fortune in the western direction, in the four seasons, or in the areas dominated by metal and earth, where one can approach official positions and face wealth. One does not like the southeastern direction of wood and fire, where the hurting officer ruins wealth. If both Geng and Xin are seen in the four pillars, it is called the mixing of official and evil spirits. Without proper control or elimination, it will lead to poverty and low status. If only Geng is present without control, it should be regarded as an evil spirit. One should determine the good or bad fortune, longevity or early death by comparing the strength of the self and the evil spirit. If the control is appropriate, it can be regarded as a partial official; if the control is excessive, it will not bring blessings. Moreover, one should also consider whether the day stem is strong or weak, and whether it has assistance or not in the month of birth, and make a judgment according to the shallowness or depth, and the lightness or heaviness of the solar terms. One prefers a fortune where the self is strong and the evil spirit is weak, and dislikes a fortune where the self is weak and the evil spirit is strong.

On the days of the sixth combination of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches (Liu Yi days), when using Wu as the proper wealth, Si as the partial wealth, Geng as the proper official, and Xin as the partial official. If the characters Wu, Si, and Geng are revealed in the year, month, and hour columns and one is born in the three autumn months, the four seasons, or a metal - earth elemental combination, the wealth and official positions are useful. If these three characters are not revealed and one is born in the three autumn months, the four seasons, or a metal - earth elemental combination, it can also be regarded as having wealth and official positions. When seeing Jia and Yi competing for wealth and Bing as the damaging officer, it is difficult to achieve fame and fortune. If one is born in spring and summer or a fire - wood elemental combination, even if there are wealth and official positions, they lack vital energy; even if they get some support, it is still of little significance. One prefers to have the luck cycle in the western direction, the four seasons, or the areas related to metal and earth, where one can approach official positions and encounter wealth, and avoids the areas of fire and wood, where the damaging officer will ruin the wealth. One should beware of the mixture of official and killing qi. If there is killing qi without restraint, it is regarded as an evil influence; if the restraint is either excessive or insufficient, it will not bring blessings. One should further examine whether the day stem has strength and support in the month of birth and make a judgment based on the degree of strength. The preferences and taboos in the luck cycle are the same as above.

San Ming Tong Hui. Volume Four

The third and fourth Heavenly Stems (in the traditional Chinese system of reckoning time)

The Yin Bing Fire represents the pure qi of the sun and can give life to all things. It thrives when born in the spring or summer months, naturally achieving a state of great vitality. If it encounters the Heavenly and Monthly Virtues and moves in the eastern direction of the fortune, it is extremely auspicious. Even if it meets the Ren and Gui Waters, it is not a problem. However, it only fears the appearance of the Wu Earth, which will reduce its positive aspects. When the Grand Luck and the Annual Star conflict, there may be troubles with the authorities, legal issues, financial losses, and mourning. If it is born in the autumn or winter, especially at night, and the earthly branches form a water combination, the person will either be a servant or a follower, experiencing a life of separation, loneliness, poverty, early death, or disability.

The Ding Fire belongs to the Yin category and is ordinary fire, which can shape all things. Gold, silver, copper, and iron cannot be made into useful tools without the shaping of Ding Fire. It prefers to be born at night, and the months of Si, You, and Chou in the lunar calendar are excellent. If born in the first lunar month with the presence of Yin, it is the Heavenly Virtue Seal Element, and it is even better if there is also the character Mao. It avoids the Ren and Gui waters. If born during the day, it often brings harm to one's wife and children. When encountering the southern direction in the fortune - telling context, it may lead to the loss of official positions; when the fortune moves towards the northwest, it brings nobility.

For those with Bing or Ding as the Day Master, fire serves as the root. Gold and water are the sources of fortune. If one's fortune-telling shows a journey towards the west and north, even if there is wealth and honor, it won't be complete.

On Bing and Ding days, when one sits on the water positions of Shen, Zi, Chen, and Hai in the natal chart and the hour pillar is related to metal. If one is born in the months of Yin, Wu, and Si, it represents the balance of water and fire, indicating great nobility. In the fifth month of summer, the three - combination fire formation should be avoided, as excessive fire will dry up the water. In the Zi month of winter, the three - combination water formation should be taken into account, as excessive water will extinguish the fire. Only when water and fire are in balance can the state of "mutual complementarity of water and fire" be achieved. The favorable grand fortune lies in the balance between metal and water, and one should avoid going to extremes, whether it is excessive or insufficient, or being overly yin or overly yang, which will lead to a situation of "all show and no substance". If one is born in the months of Shen, Zi, Chen, and Hai, the hours of Yin, Wu, Xu, and Si are needed to attain nobility. If not born at these hours, the wood - related fortune is favorable; otherwise, one will only have a false reputation without real nobility.

On the days with the Heavenly Stem Bing in the sixth group of the ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches combinations, Geng and Xin are regarded as wealth, Gui is the proper official, and Ren is the partial official. If the characters Geng, Xin, and Gui appear in the Heavenly Stems of the year, month, and hour columns, and one is born in the autumn and winter when the metal and water elements are in the prosperous phase and form a metal - water situation, the wealth and official positions are useful. Even if these three characters do not appear in the Heavenly Stems, but one is born in the autumn and winter when the metal - water situation is formed, it can also be regarded as having wealth and official positions. If Bing and Ding appear, they will seize the wealth; and when Ji appears, it is regarded as an adverse influence on official career. In such cases, it is difficult to achieve fame and fortune. If one is born in the hot summer or the four seasons when the fire - earth situation is formed, even if there are elements representing wealth and official positions, they are in a weak state. Even if they receive some support, their influence is still insignificant.

One takes pleasure in being in the northwest area corresponding to the Metal and Water signs in the astrological division, and is in the fortune of having an official position and approaching wealth. If both Ren and Gui are seen in the Bazi (Four Pillars of Destiny), there is a mixture of official and evil influences. Without control, it will lead to a low - status life. If there is Ren but no Gui and no control, it should be regarded as an evil influence. One needs to distinguish the strength of the self and the evil influence to determine the good or bad fortune, longevity or premature death. If the control is appropriate, it can be regarded as a partial official influence; if it is excessive, it will not bring blessings. Moreover, one should examine whether the day - stem is strong or weak in the month of birth, whether there is rescue or not, and make a judgment according to the importance of the solar terms. One takes pleasure in being in the fortune where the self is strong and the evil influence is weak, and avoids being in the situation where the self is weak and the evil influence is strong.

In the daily use of the Six Ding (heavenly stems), Geng and Xin are regarded as wealth, Ren is the proper official, and Gui is the partial official. If Geng, Xin, and Ren are revealed in the year, month, and hour columns and one is born in the autumn or winter when the water and metal elements are in a strong situation, the wealth and official positions are useful. Even if these three characters are not revealed but one is born in the autumn or winter with a water - metal situation, it can also be regarded as having wealth and official positions. If Bing and Ding appear, they will seize the wealth; if Wu appears, it is the damage to the official, and achieving fame and fortune will be arduous. If one is born in the hot summer or the four seasons when the fire and earth elements are in a strong situation, even if there are wealth and official positions, they lack vitality. Even if there is some support, it is still of little significance. It is favorable to have the luck in the north - west direction and the areas dominated by metal and water, and it is taboo to have the damage to the official and the defeat of the wealth luck. One should be afraid of the mixture of the official and the evil star. If there is an evil star without restraint, it is regarded as a bad omen; if the restraint is excessive, one will be poor. Moreover, it is necessary to examine in detail whether the day stem has support in the month of birth to determine the situation's severity. The preferences and taboos of the luck are the same as above.

E and Ji (the fifth and sixth of the Ten Heavenly Stems in traditional Chinese astronomy and calendar)

If Earth of the Wu stem is of the Yang nature, it represents the earth of embankments and city walls. It can only hold back water and cannot nurture all things. As long as the city walls and embankments are not damaged by conflicts and break - ups, the people can live in peace. It favors the Wood of the Jia and Yi stems, as it is the place where the killing energy is transformed into the seal energy.

It is taboo to have a fortune in the Western direction. Even if there is a rise, there will be setbacks and worries. Fire is needed for support, and water is disliked as it restrains. If the Earth elements (Wu and Ji) appear repeatedly, both fame and fortune will be lost. If the Metal elements (Xin and Geng) come across one after another, actions will be hesitant.
